As the popular saying goes, A well-composed book is a magic carpet on which we are wafted to a world that we cannot enter in any other way. So the role of African American authors in depicting the hardships faced by blacks in Americas history cannot be understated.

Blacks have played an important part in Americas history. The voice of black citizens is often best expressed through their writing. When one surveys the wealth of material from the earliest days in America until today, the unfolding of the Black Experience is clear. While you get a sense of the time and place of each piece in African American fiction books, the emotional intensity is never clearer than when experiencing African American poems. These powerful pieces can almost transport you inside the life of their skilled authors.

The writings by several famous black authors go on to depict the agonizing experiences blacks have gone through. These books can have such an effect on their readers that they can get deeply absorbed in feelings and emotions that stirred in the authors mind at the time of writing. Books by authors like Michael Eric Dyson, Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Michael Roberts and Jerome Dickey have significantly contributed in showing the inside lives of Black men and women.

African American Novels/Stories are the true essence of representing cultural experience of being Black in America. They can very well connect with universal readers. This helps to create a feeling of acceptance and being part of a wider community among African American readers.

There was a time in the not so distant past when only black readers enjoyed the works of black authors. Luckily that time has passed and talented writers of color enjoy the readership of large segments of society. African American fiction books like The Color Purple, Roots: The Saga of an American Family, and Beloved reached a national audience and widespread popularity. Each of these titles, and many others by black authors, has achieved bestseller status.

Also, the soaring popularity of black celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and singer Akon reinforces the fact that Blacks today are just like Whites. They are treated with same respect and make as many or more contributions to the society as whites do.
