Thailand is certainly an exotic destination that people dream of visiting all around the world. When planning a trip to Asia, many have it as their first stop. It has been a top destination for years and it is increasingly growing in popularity.
Even though it is popular, it still can be overwhelming when visiting such a vastly different culture. Proper planning is a must and here are some ideas for exciting activities that will actually be a little different than what the average tourist will take part in.
Rock Climbing in Railay - Railay in Krabi Provence is one of the premier sport climbing destinations in the world. There are routes to fit everyone from the beginner climber to seasoned professional. You can take beginner courses, multi day lead climbing courses, rent gear or go off on your own and explore that many bolted routes. Railay bay is absolutely beautiful with limestone cliffs jutting out of the water and surrounding its horseshoe beaches.
Elephant Trek in Khao Sok - A beautiful National Park in Southern Thailand, it is less of a circus than the elephant treks in Chang Mai. The elephants seem to be treated fairly and look healthy in Khao Sok and to sit upon this gentle giant is a thrill. They manage to maneuver down steep hills and over rough terrain with ease as you hang on hoping not to take a tumble off your high perch. Stay in one of the many bungalows in the park and spend days exploring the trails, waterfalls and wildlife.
Northern Thailand is one of the most popular spots for anyone traveling the country. People visit hill tribes, take cooking courses, shop in the famous night market or head up to Pai to chill out and relax. But a meditation course is an incredible way to immerse yourself in the culture. Find your centre as you meditate, learn tai chi and cleanse by eating a vegetarian diet. Your body will thank you.
The Bridge on the River Kwai was made famous in a movie, but it's story lives on in Kanchanaburi. Destroyed by air raids during the war, it has been re-built and tourists are free to walk on the famous death railway. POW and Thai citizens were used to build the bridge and the brutalities that they faced are documented in the JEATH War Museum and great care is taken to maintain the cemetery.
When visiting Thailand, you cannot miss Bangkok and one of the must do activities there is to hire a tuk tuk. Little 3 wheeled motorbikes act as taxis whisking people around the city as they zip in and out of traffic. It is an adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat. They aren't metered so be sure to settle on a price before getting in.
Something that every Tourist should do is visit one of Thailand's many waterfalls. It is a welcome change to the hear and they are absolutely lovely set on high rocks in the jungle. It is hard to choose a favorite, but Ko Samui has an incredible watering hole.
There are many things to do in Thailand that most people already know about from the tour books. Visit the Grand Palace, try your hand at kickboxing or check out some traditional dancing. To truly appreciate everything that Thailand has to offer, you will be tempted to revisit year after year.
